Counseling Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)

No! Of course not - people experience challenges throughout life where they benefit from having someone to talk to in order to process things. There are a plethora of reasons why people come to counseling and none of them are wrong or make a person “crazy”. In fact, it takes a lot of strength to see a counselor to deal with challenges you may be experiencing, then it does to avoid or ignore those challenges and develop unhealthy ways of coping with them.

Almost everything discussed in counseling is confidential with the exception of where the law prohibits. I have a duty to warn in harmful situations. This includes plans to harm yourself, someone else, or if you are being hurt. I am also a mandated reporter so any information provided regarding abuse or neglect to children or elderly that have not been reported already, a hotline call will need to be completed. With exception of those things, counseling is confidential and most often these situations do not arise that require any reporting or a duty to warn of harm. The only other way information can be shared is if you complete a release of information form.

Every individual is different, it is hard to say how often any one person will need to attend counseling. The frequency at which you attend counseling will be determined between you and your counselor and can range from weekly, biweekly, monthly or as needed. Each session is approximately 50 minutes long.
